Sisters have big plans Miss Chu was born in Christchurch. Both sisters said they were “very excited” to be on the community board. Said Ms Chen: “I am very excited my sister is on a community board as well as she is so young.” She said her priority is to get traffic lights for the Breens, Gardiners and Harewood Rds intersection. “I am hoping, being the youngest on the Harewood board, to utilise that youth and energy and be that approachable person that really makes a difference,” she said. At the top of Miss Chu’s list is to bring ethnic groups together, and deal with traffic congestion and parking issues. Having a strong interest in foreign language and culture, Miss Chu has been studying Chinese and Japanese part time at Canterbury University on top of her job. “From a really young age I had enjoyed listening to other people and I was really excited when I knew I could be able to help people make their lives better,” Miss Chu said. At 20-years-old Miss Chu is the youngest community board member in the city, representing Riccarton, while sister Ms Chen, 27, was elected to represent Harewood. Ms Chen received 3391 votes to take her place on the FendaltonWaimairi-Harewood Community Board. Aaron Campbell will take the other spot after receiving 2602 votes. Miss Chu, a Westpac business bank manager, received 2074 votes getting the nod alongside long-time local body politician Helen Broughton receiving 2457 to take the two spots on the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board. Ms Chen moved to New Zealand with her parents from South Korea when she was five-years-old while

THERE IS a new face representing the west of the city after the local body elections at the weekend – Anne Galloway. She slipped in by the tightest of margins – just 97 votes – but as Caitlin Miles found out, she has a very interesting background working with children and social services (page 3). She will be one to watch over the next three years. Joining her is incumbent Jimmy Chen in the newly established Hornby Ward and Vicki Buck elected unopposed in the Riccarton Ward. Familiar face Peter Laloli is out of local body politics after failing to get elected both to the city council and community board. He takes it on the chin as you would expect (page 3). Fashion By Caitlin Miles and Georgia O’Connor-Harding LOCAL BODY politics is a far cry from helping troubled children in London schools but newly elected city councillor Anne Galloway says she’s up for the job. After Saturday’s election results, Mrs Galloway won the new Halswell Ward by 97 votes over Chrys Horn. Yesterday, Mrs Galloway went straight back to work at Rowley Ave School as part of her role with Family Help Trust, a role she will resign from to concentrate on her new job. She has been coordinator of the learning programme for five years and before that she spent a year in London with primary children who had been expelled from school. It is a big change for Mrs Galloway, who is aligned with political group The People’s Choice, but the reason she made the change was primarily because of her grandchildren. “They were a big part of my motivation, I want my grandchildren to have the best they can,” Mrs Galloway said.

Mr Laloli said while he was disappointed he wasn’t reelected, he wished the newly elected candidates well. “I thought that being a new area they were somewhere that needed experience but anyway these things happen. It’s politics, if you can’t afford to lose you shouldn’t stand,” he said. Prior to working on the community board, Mr Laloli worked as a senior sergeant in Hornby for about 25 years.

Bowie tribute picked up by School pupils feature in documentry VILLA MARIA College student Jordan Price will feature in an international documentary after a David Bowie tribute song she was involved in got picked up by an Italian filmaker. The song, Starman in the Stars, was written and performed by Mandi Miller, Mark Wilson and their band All the Queen’s Horses and a choir of school pupils. Italian film project Ritratti will be using the music video in a collective multi-media film called BowieNext. Ms Miller, of Woolston, is overjoyed with the news, saying she had hoped the track would get snapped up and used. “I have been promoting it and been trying to find people that are making David Bowie

documentaries, so this is really exciting,” she said. Pupils from Sumner School, Redcliffs School, Heathcote Valley School, Cashmere High School, Burnside High School, St Margaret’s College and Marian College also helped record the track at Orange Studios in Ferrymead. It was made as a tribute to the late David Bowie who passed away in January this year. “They all learnt the chorus and held down the main melody and I improvised over top of them. Their voices really stand out. The added element of the children in the video was really significant to me because Bowie was still making music up until he passed and I think they’re a new generation of Bowie

fans,” she said. Ms Miller has been a singing teacher at Sumner School for nearly 10 years and she also teaches at Redcliffs School. The 26 students that feature are current and former singing students of hers. “There are some really good voices out there and the children are such good kids. They’re kind and considerate people but, vocally, I’ve had some amazing singers come through,” she said. Mr Wilson and Ms Miller make up the cover duo X-Files and are also a part of the rock band Retrosonic and All the Queen’s Horses. The duo are now working on there next video after filming a video in the United States of America.

Liquor store opposed By Georgia O’Connor-Harding CONCERN IS growing over an application lodged for a new liquor store on Riccarton Rd, with opponents saying there are already too many in the area. PM Liquors Ltd has applied for a new off-licence liquor store to be situated at 76 Riccarton Rd, directly next to the Ministry of Social Development’s Work and Income. Issues raised by Riccarton residents include the number of liquor outlets based along Riccarton Rd and the close proximity to Work and Income. Riccarton Bush-Kilmarnock Residents’ Association chairman Tony Simons said, in his personal view, it was “inappropriate” to place a liquor store next door to Work and Income. “Why would you put a casino or liquor outlet, or anything that encourages people to waste their money, next to Work and Income,” he said. He was also concerned at the number of liquor stores already in the area. Bars and liquor stores in the area include The Craic Irish Bar, Fox & Ferret Riccarton, Liquorland and Liquor King. Mr Simons said he is not sug-

Christchurch City missioner Michael Gorman questioned whether the city needed anymore liquor licences, saying great care needs to be taken on the location of alcohol outlets. “To position it right where there are very vulnerable people seems to be really unhelpful,” Mr Gorman said. But he said it is an issue that affects everyone – not just those

who are “vulnerable.” The intended operation times for the store would be Monday to Sunday, 9am-11pm. A public notification was released on September 27 and public objections can be received until October 18. The Ministry of Social Development declined to comment on the issue and whether they would make an objection to the liquor store. The applicants could not be located for comment. Concert celebrates band’s 125 years By Caitlin Miles WOOLSTON BRASS has survived the Depression, two world wars, the February 22, 2011 earthquake and now it is marching into its 126th year. The band’s marketing and sponsorship manager Caroline Blackmore said since the band was formed in 1891 it had survived some ‘catastrophic’ events over the years but it has never stopped performing. The band celebrated its 125th birthday at the weekend when it hosted a concert, playing many of its own pieces and some old favourites. Miss Blackmore credits the bands past to its award-winning achievements. “It’s had a successful history. Championship wins have been really big for us and I think it’s part of the way we strive for music excellence,” Miss Blackmore said. Miss Blackmore is the second member of her family to be in the band. And she’s not the only one. “My dad was in the band before me and I there are a couple of others like us. We also have a wide age group from 19 to 70,” she said.

She said the band of 33 musicians had received over 25 awards, unsure of just how many it had won since it started. “It certainly has been a lot, with national and international competitions,” she said. Some of the band’s accolades include winning the Edinburgh Festival Contest, placing fifth in the 1975 British Open Championships and winning four national contests back to back. Music director Tyme Masters said the band had upheld its reputation at the latest competition it competed in. “At the national contest held in Napier this year, the band maintained its strong reputation with success in the solo and ensemble events,” Mr Masters said. Over the years it has also created eight albums, their latest, The Woolstonian, was released earlier this year as part of the birthday celebrations. The February 22, 2011 earthquake left the band’s Woolston building damaged and now it is looking for a new home. “We are looking for a site where we can build a purpose built studio and of course we want to stay in Woolston,” Miss Blackmore said.

Providing welfare and a home Former Villa Maria College student Jessica Armstrong has been managing the Lyttelton Seafarers’ Centre with her husband for more than a year. Annabelle Dick chats to her about the centre’s role in the community and the people they serve So first of all, what does the Lyttelton Seafarers’ Centre do? We provide a centre for all seafarers, so anyone who works on ships or in the port and we give them a home away from home. We give them a place to hang out, we provide free Wi-Fi as well so they can contact their friends and family because calling home that is the main thing they want to do when they get off the ship. We exchange foreign cash into New Zealand currency so they can buy stuff at the supermarket, or whatever they need, because there’s no bank in Lyttelton. We give away free warm clothes . . . we’ve given away about 50 winter coats and hats and scarves. We also provide them with free food and drinks. Basically, its all of that and we give them someone to talk to if they want to talk to someone. How many people do you get coming through your doors? We fluctuate a lot depending on the amount of ships in the

port, our maximum is about 28 and some nights we only get a handful. On average we get about 12 people per night. We opened in July last year and we’ve served close to 3500 people from all over the world. The main places they come from are the Philippines, Russia and Ukraine. You must have heard a lot of interesting stories then? Yes, they’re all a very different bunch of people and we have them all in at the same time so it makes for a very interesting centre. How many people work at the centre? We’ve got 20 regular volunteers at the moment and we have about 10 people in training who have just started their training. Everyone is a volunteer. What were seafarers doing before the centre existed? They used to hang out outside the library where there was free Wi-Fi but they didn’t have any

shelter. When we first started we walked up the road to go and collect them and they were sitting outside in very cold temperatures in winter and they just wanted to contact home. We give them somewhere to be because there’s not a lot open in Lyttelton at night unless you’re a bar. What kind of feedback do you get from the seamen you

have come in? They do really appreciate what we do and even if they do speak very little English they express it non-verbally with big smiles. Most of them thank us at the end of the night. A lot of the Filipino men are away from their young families so they’ll get on Skype at the centre and show us their families and their babies so that’s

really lovely to see when they might not be able to otherwise. As it’s a free service, how important are time and monetry contributions? We provide them with free Wi-Fi and we have a heat pump and things like that and we don’t have high costs as such but we need to fund the continual running costs.

away from home for seafarers We’re wanting to spread the news about who we are and what we do and that we’re always looking out for new volunteers because we’d like to be open every afternoon and every evening, but we’re not there yet. We’re open Monday to Friday every week in the evenings and every second Saturday and some afternoons. Where does the funding come from? The centre is run by a trust administered by Anglicans and Catholics. We’ve signed up with the Lyttelton Harbour Timebank to help with supplying clothes for the seamen. Charles Shadbolt from Independent Fisheries has made the site temporarily rentfree until a permanent site is found. The Lyttelton Port Company has donated some funds, food is supplied by the Salvation Army and local fundraisers help towards paying for necessities. What have some of the highlights been during the time you’ve volunteered there? having conversations with them is nice. You can tell they really appreciate just having someone to talk to and sharing a little bit of their lives with someone. I love all the amazing volunteers because we wouldn’t be able to do anything without them they just open their hearts by doing this once a week or once a fortnight so this has been a really awesome experience.

What are your hopes for the future of the centre? My hope is that we’d be able to open for longer so we were there if people wanted to use the centre. So are you originally from Christchurch? Yes, I grew up in Christchurch and I went to Villa Maria College. My husband is also from Christchurch. We moved to Wellington where I did my com-

merce degree in management and HR and a BA in information systems at Victoria University. I stayed there for about three years after I finished. My partner and I moved back to Christchurch in January of last year. What prompted you to become a part of the centre? The centre itself is run by the Anglican and Catholic churches so when I was living in Wellington and was at mass on a Sunday they asked if someone could help out as a volunteer one night a week so I signed up for that with my husband for two years and then we moved back to Christchurch and became the volunteer managers at the Lyttelton centre. Did you ever see yourself getting involved in work like this?

Not really. The opportunity just occurred . . . I didn’t predict something like this would happen and I’d be volunteering my time outside of work so I was out of the blue in that respect. People really needed us especially in Lyttelton where the centre had just started and they didn’t have anybody that had the experience to manage it. When you’re not with the centre, what are you doing? I work outside of the centre as well so I do software development. I work most of the week in Auckland so I travel there quite often. At the moment it’s about three days in Auckland a week and two days in Christchurch. I’m pretty busy so yeah it’s a bit of a challenge.

The innovation by the Fendalton-Waimari Community Board to offer free food, towels and discount cards for those choosing to cycle to this venue, while commendable, is rife with anomalies. It would be virtually impossible to police those who cycled also any arriving there and producing a helmet merely to capitalise on the discount offer. Cycling or utilising public transport will always be ongoing by those motivated to choose this option of travel, devoid of the necessity for discounts for this realistic decision. If 114 car parks is deemed insufficient to cater for 238,024 personnel between the summer months of December 2015 and March 2016, then the reality is to add more. However, charging a fee for them is a retrograde step

As part of the programme, children had to negotiate a laser field made of string, rescue an Air Force Museum agent and search for a “dangerous device” to save the day. Classic TV comedy on stage Dad’s Army Produced by Cas ‘n’ Ova Productions Directed by Craig Hutchison and Rebecca Wakelin Reviewed by Georgia O’Connor-Harding Cas ‘n’ Ova has put on a humorous production about an endearing army of men too old or “unfit” for military service during World War 2. If you didn’t laugh throughout the show, you were certainly in the minority. Chuckles could be heard for most of the production, which I am sure would have been an interesting experience for some of the fairly new actors to the showbiz scene. Based on the BBC comedy, Dad’s Army recounts the misadventures of a voluntary defence force known as the Home Guard. Considering some of the actors had barely any acting experience at all, the cast put in a solid effort. And it was great a seasoned director such as Craig Hutchison took on board fresh-faced actors willing to give theatre a go.

Mike MacLeod pulled off the role of Captain Mainwaring well. I loved the expressive pout he would make when he was angry. I saw many of those pouts

particularly during a comical but disastrous date with Mrs Gray where Mainwaring was continuously interrupted by his soldiers.

Like many of the cast, MacLeod had an uncanny resemblance to the original Captain Mainwaring, played by Arthur Lowe, which I think any

Dad’s Army fan would adore. It was unfortunate MacLeod was dealing with a distracting cough, which is understandably difficult to deal with. He did his best, but it tainted what was a strong performance. Peter Watt, playing the role of Private Frazer, was a hit with the audience. Being a Scot himself, his accent was spot-on – but it was that classic blokey demeanour that gave him a great stage presence. Occasionally it looked as though the actors missed their cues and there seemed to be a bit of over-acting but, at the same time, these small imperfections added to the show’s comical value. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this show. It wasn’t a full-scale professional production but the cast deserves to be acknowledged, particularly for their charisma. It was clear they enjoyed being up on stage and I think they would have had a lot of fun putting this show together. Go to the show not for perfection, but for a good night out. •The show finished on Saturday.

In the front row at fashion week Annabelle Dick reports on Ballantynes Fashion Week WALKING THROUGH the doors of The Contemporary Lounge, two polite doormen welcomed me and ushered me upstairs towards the launch party of Ballantynes Fashion Week. I was poured a glass of Daniel Le Brun bubbles and escorted to my seat in the atrium, where beautiful white flowers adorned the main stage and a long catwalk came out from in between the flora. There I saw hundreds of eager fashionistas lined up like dominoes along the catwalk in wait of the latest spring and summer trends. As luxurious as it was, the event wasn’t restricted to the elite in search of the most avantgarde pieces for their designer wardrobe. Ballantynes Fashion Week was more of a come one, come all-

garments with just a hint of denim to floor-length denim dresses. My favourite ensemble of the evening was the resort look, featuring the Isaac Lulu Vinnie pant. The model was dressed impeccably head to toe and I was an absolute sucker for those wide leg pants – those are my biggest must-have at the moment. While I’m a big advocate of black and white, I felt the monochrome wear was a bit off. The prints screamed “I’m in my

early 40s and I work in an office” and the outfits looked shifty and uncomfortable. Ballantynes Fashion Week also featured a mums and bubs day, a menswear and beer event and an Art in Fashion Day for Ara Institute of Canterbury students to showcase their garments. This is the second year Ballantynes has hosted a fashion week so maybe they’re still trying to find their feet, but I see their annual event, like a good wine, getting better with time.

Migraine relief Krissy Winter saw an article in the local newspaper a year ago and having suffered from debilitating migraines wondered if the treatment would help her.

UC student champion barefoot waterskier RECENTLY CROWNED Canterbury University sportsperson of the year Georgia Groen is the best female barefoot waterskier in the world. She won the overall open women’s title at the Barefoot Waterski World Championships held in Wisconsin, United States. Miss Groen was the first New Zealand barefoot waterskier to ever win the overall open world title. “It’s surreal. It’s something you dream about for so long.” Ever since she competed in her first world championships as a 12-year-old junior [under 17] in 2009 it had been her dream to become overall women’s world champion. In addition to the overall title, Ms Groen, 20, also obtained her third consecutive open world trick title, silver in open slalom, silver in open jump, and a bronze in the open team overall event. The week-long championships hosted 13 different countries and more than 100 athletes. The competition had three events: Slalom, tricks and jump. Each event was worth 1000 points with the overall place calculated by adding up how much each skier scored in each event. Ms Groen scored 2878.54 points with second placed Ashleigh Stebbings snapping at her heels with 2869.57 points – a difference of 8.97 points. Georgia, who lived in Otaki before moving to Christchurch to study for a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Canterbury University, took the second semester
